A blockbuster built on complementary strengths.
Plavix®/Iscover® (clopidogrel bisulfate tablets)
Both Sanofi-Synthelabo and Bristol-Myers Squibb believed that Plavix®/Iscover® (clopidogrel bisulfate tablets) could help manage arterial thrombosis in millions of patients. Each company also had individual goals -- Sanofi-Synthelabo to build a greater presence in the U.S., and Bristol-Myers Squibb to strengthen its cardiovascular market position.
The two companies pooled their strengths to maximize clopidogrel's therapeutic potential, with technical knowledge and a powerful European regulatory and sales organization from Sanofi-Synthelabo and historic strengths in cardiovascular products, sales and marketing, and clinical development from Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Two major studies demonstrated significant value, both competing with and augmenting the standard therapy of aspirin. The product grew to more than $2 billion in five years, while both partners moved towards their individual goals. Sanofi-Synthelabo has a greater U.S. presence, and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. And we have strengthened our position as a leader in cardiovascular medicine, worldwide.
