Environmental Performance: Water Use

Bristol-Myers Squibb continues to focus on reducing our water use around the world and striving to make sure our wastewater effluent does not negatively impact the quality of water available for others. We have established two Sustainability 2010 Goals for water use:

  • 10 percent reduction in water use, normalized by sales, from a 2001 baseline year.
  • 20 percent reduction from a 2002 baseline year in countries where water resources are severely stressed.

Bristol-Myers Squibb’s water use decreased by 7 percent since 2001, and by 20 percent when normalized by sales. This reduction exceeds one of our Sustainability 2010 Goals: to reduce water use by 10 percent, normalized by sales.

In countries where water resources are severely stressed, we have established a more stringent 2010 goal: in each of the water-stressed countries in which we have facilities, we will reduce water use by 20 percent from a 2002 baseline year. In 2007, the combined water use of our facilities in 4 of the 9 water stressed countries had achieved this 20 percent reduction goal.

The water maps below display the location of Bristol-Myers Squibb facilities worldwide using the Global Water Tool and maps from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The first map shows the annual renewable water supply per person in each country for 1995. The second map shows the annual renewable water supply per person projected for 2025. As shown in the legend, renewable water supplies range from extreme scarcity (red) to abundant (green). Water use is a key material issue for our company, and these maps help us to assess our water use and risks relative to water availability. The company has established a water reduction goal of 10 percent from 2001 to 2010.

The maps also help identify the areas that are especially water stressed and demand further conservation efforts. Bristol-Myers Squibb has selected 9 countries of the world where our facilities are located that are water stressed. Our facilities located in these countries have a more aggressive water reduction goal of 20 percent from 2002 to 2010 as part of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Sustainability Goals. To date, our facilities in four countries have met this goal (noted with *).

Mexico
Philippines* Puerto Rico*
Egypt* China Thailand
Pakistan* Ecuador Panama

We continue to monitor our water use around the world and develop additional opportunities for water conservation in stressed areas.
